Northeast of the settlement Kounàvoi, next to the chapel of Agios Nikolaos, we find remains of a vaulted grape press. “The grape press rests against the northern wall of the chapel and has a N-S orientation. The vault has been plastered with astrakasvestos [a mixture of lime and ‘astraki’ –shards of clay vessels smashed to fine powder] In the 16th and 17the centuries the best known wine varieties were ‘marouvas’, ‘logado’, muscatel and the famous ‘malvazias’, whose vines were also cultivated at Kounàvoi. A document from 1608 mentions that Alfonso da Ferrara lends to Ioannis Varanis, subject of Mr. Georgi from the “village Kounàvoi, Pediada, 100 hyperpyra [Byzantine coins] for the cultivation of vines in the area, with malvazia vines from the same vineyard”. (G. Katsalis, 2007, at ELTYNA SCONAV KOUNAVOI). It is a prominent position, with unobstructed view all around.
On the north slope of the Kounavoi valley, with prominent placement and a beautiful view, just above the Fountana fountain, the remains of a vaulted grape press at “Korakia” have been preserved. “The floor of the grape press was formed on the rocky, sloping ground, plastered with astrakasvesto, while right to the east a collection basin was carved out of the rock” (G. Katsalis, 2007, in ΕΛΤΥΝΑ SCONAV ΚΟΥΝΑΒΟΙ). The surrounding wall has been preserved, as well as the collection basin and the lithic fountain.
