Pezà is currently a vineland and at Agios Konstantinos “there was located a complex of four adjacent grape presses, built on slanting ground, facing east”. (Georgios Katsalis, Maria Mari, 2022, Οίνος παλαιός ηδύποτος [Wine, old, sweet-flavoured]). Nowadays the surrounding area is dominated by olive trees, but in the past vineyards and olive groves used to alternate according to market demands, since they have both been fundamental pillars of the local economy. In Creto-Venetian times, wine used to be Crete’s ‘breath’ and viniculture turned out rather profitable, particularly in this area, where the soil and microclimate strongly favor cultivation of the vine.
